By ecom131 What drives us the most- to achieve?Open questions lots of possible answers - fear, fear of poverty, fear of failure, fear of death, fear of insignificance, fear of you name it: - hunger, hunger for money, fame, wealth, power: ego, need to be noticed, need to have control, need for power, need to be number one, need to be liked, need to be acknowledged: - there are many drives, most of these the drive for money or fame or to outrun fear, tend to end badly. Not that they don't 'work', in so much as they drive us to achieve a goal, but once there there is the next goal, the next milestone the next hundred thousand the next million, the next one upmanship. Most 'successful' people we see in the media are following these drives, and when you read their biographies, most, not all, end unhappy, unsure, badly. Not all, but many. And then there are the achievers whop seem to cruise through life, they achieve goals, monumental goals, but they don't seem stressed, anxious, unhappy, nor does their drive seem endless, they achieve things and are happy with the achievement, and sometimes go on to other achievements and sometimes, they don't, but they don't end badly. Their drive seems to be 'joy'. That is a desire to achieve for the sake, the joy of achieving, the desire to accomplish for the sake and sheer outlandish buzz of accomplishing. Not an addictive buzz, not an addictive joy, this isn't a heroin substitute. What if the actual secret to sustained (sustainability being an 'in' word these days) a sustained life of good fortune (However you define it) was joy. Imagine if you set out not to beat the competition, to show those bastards what you are made of, or to turn the tables, or fight the good fight, or beat them at their own game or to get frigging rich and lord it over all those yobbos... What if the motivator was joy of accomplishing?... Then not every 'success' would have to be measured in dollars, or medals, or notoriety, or media attention. In fact 'success' would become, well, a life of created good fortune. A life where every stumble, or hard knock, or bad break is incorporated into the overall fact of a life. One could say - " That's how it is, we are handed good things and bad things, advantages and disadvantages, but I have accomplished - this or that, and that or this makes me happy. And so therefore I am a success story." Perhaps. Ecom131 writes on some strange subjects - check out the success info here- http://martingover.com. That's not strange - but some of the stuff is.
